Poster © Austin Cline The hostility experienced by atheists in America can be traced in part to two related issues: Americans' perception of their nation as being a fundamentally religious project entrusted with a special mission from God and the fight against communism in the Cold War. These two factors have led to the treatment of atheists as a godless enemy, a fifth column either for Satan or for totalitarian communism (or both). This perception of atheists remains true even today when there is no "commie menace" pointing nuclear weapons at America. A good enemy is hard to give up.
