If the separation of church and state is going to mean anything, it must mean that people cannot be forced by the state to live according to the rules of others' religion. One or many religious groups may regard something as sacred, but that doesn't mean everyone else must be forced by the state to do so as well. One or many religious groups may consider same-sex marriage a sacrilege, but doesn't mean that civil marriage laws must be written to exclude same-sex marriage.
