Muammar Qadhafi

Born: 1942
Died: n/a
Graduated from Military Academy: 1965
Libyan Leader: September 1, 1969 - today
Biography:
Even at an early age, Moammar Gadhafi opposed the pro-Western policies of the Libyan government and preferred instead that Libya perused an Arab-centered set of international policies. There is probably a personal aspect to his anti-Western views, because his father was killed by an Italian colonist in 1911. He finally got his chance to see such pan-Arab ideas put into practice when he lead a coup against King Idris Senussi I and took control of the nation on September 1, 1969.
Gadhafi's vision for Libya is essentially utopian in nature. He regards Western colonialism as the root cause of all of the problems of the Arab world. In order to reach his dream, his intention is to remove all of the artificial, Western-imposed "barriers" (borders) around Lybia and create a new Arab state - with him at the helm, of course. He has made enemies of virtually everyone - not just Western powers but even other Arab nations as well.
Gadhafi has survived numerous assassination attempts and, in 1986, he survived a U.S air strike on his palace in Lybia, launched in retaliation for his support of international terrorism.
