Surveys consistently show that the numbers of atheists, agnostics, skeptics, and nonbelievers generally are growing in America. What the surveys don't always show is that the increase is due largely to increasing numbers in younger people. Most age groups retain the same rates of religiosity or secularism throughout their lives -- wherever they are in their early 20s is where they tend to remain (statistically).
So it's really only through appeals to younger people that atheists will be able to grow in the long-term. Religious leaders know this, that's why they make such a big deal about anything which might instill more humanistic values or ideas in children, for example in public schools. It's why they go nuts over efforts to instill more tolerance in younger people -- they know that whatever kids learn when they are young, they are likely to retain throughout their lives.
What about you? What age group do you belong to?
