Poster © Austin Cline Karl Marx described religion as the "opiate of the masses," but most people misunderstand this. Marx was expressing sympathy for religion and people's need for it - he didn't object to using opiates to relieve the pain of injury, he objected to relying on opiates in place of fixing the injury. Marx argued that religion blinds us to social problems by providing something pleasing to focus on. Less sympathetic interpretations of this idea can still offer legitimate insight on religion, though.
