Pastor & Deacons Accused of Assaulting Gay Couple at Church
Oct 10th 2011, 12:00

In Fruitland, Tennessee a gay couple was apparently assaulted by a gang of Christians. At a church. And the some of Christians were related to one of the gay men -- at any rate, it was the father of the one who is accused of ordering the attack. And he's the pastor of the Grace Fellowship Church.

Christians are supposed to love their enemies, but not those dirty homosexuals -- not even if they are kin, right?

"I went over to take the keys out of the ignition and all the sudden I hear someone say 'sick'em,'" said Gibson County resident, Jerry Pittman Jr.

Pittman said the attacked was prompted by the pastor of the church, Jerry Pittman, his father.

"My uncle and two other deacons came over to the car per my dad's request. My uncle smash me in the door as the other deacon knocked my boyfriend back so he couldn't help me, punching him in his face and his chest. The other deacon came and hit me through my car window in my back," said Pittman. He said bystanders did not offer assistance. He said the deacon yelled derogatory homosexual slurs, even after officers arrived. He said the officers never intervened to stop the deacons from yelling the slurs.

"If I was on the scene I would not have allowed that. The deputy should not have allowed it if he did," said Gibson County Sheriff Chuck Arnold.

OK, first: Fruitland? Fruitland? New rule: If you have a church in a town with a name like Fruitland, you just don't get to complain about gays anymore. If you do, we're going to mock you so mercilessly that you'll have to move to a new town. So just save everyone some time and either move now or make your peace with homosexuality.

Second, does it strike anyone else as odd that this gay couple was going to religious services at this church? I'm sure that this hostility didn't come out of nowhere -- there had to be plenty of signs that the father and other church leaders were less than "liberal" in their outlook, especially when it comes to sexual matters.

I'm never one to blame victims of assault for "provoking" bullies and terrorists, but I really do have to wonder why they were going to church at that place and time. There are other churches in Fruitland, or at least near by, aren't there? There are other places to have a conversation about homosexuality, aren't there? Something about this situation seems odd to me.

Conservative Christians portray gays and gay couples as a threat, but it's only gays who have to be genuinely concerned with physical assaults like this. You don't have gangs of gays or lesbians beating up priests as they try to enter church. It's only gays who get beaten up, assaulted, and sometimes even killed -- and for no other reason but that they happen to experience an emotional, psychological, and physical attraction to members of the same sex.

But that's Christianity for you in the modern world.
