Buncombe Schools May Change Policy Rather Than Allow Pagan Spell Books
Jan 14th 2012, 12:00

When Ginger Strivelli's son brought home a Gideon Bible from school she called to complain. Principal Jackie Byerly defended herself by saying that the Gideons simply dropped the books off and students were free to take one or not -- and any community group could do the same.

When Ginger Strivelli took them up on this by bringing in pagan spell books, the "policy" was suddenly under "review." Surprised? You shouldn't be

"I'm not surprised a bit. That's fully what I expected," Strivelli said. "Basically, they were calling my bluff thinking I wouldn't bring in the books.

"They're changing the policy, which is wonderful. They shouldn't (allow) it, but they shouldn't have done it to start with. That makes it unfair after they have given out Christian propaganda."

The school system released the following statement Wednesday:

"Buncombe County school officials are currently reviewing relevant policies and practices with school board attorneys; during this review period, no school in the system will be accepting donation of materials that could be viewed as advocating a particular religion or belief."

I'm no more surprised about this than Ginger Strivelli. Every single time Christians appropriate for themselves some sort of privilege like this and then are faced with non-Christians expecting the same treatment, the same Christians suddenly find all sorts of reasons to be concerned with church/state separation and start reviewing the policy. Of course, by that point Christians have already benefitted and no one else can.

And is the policy review ever truly prompted by a genuine concern for the law? I doubt it. Instead, it's more likely prompted by a concern that non-Christians not get any sort of benefit or advantage in society. Such Christians don't sincerely believe that everyone in society should be completely equal. Their attitude that Christians should have privileges denied to others is no different from the attitude that whites should have privileges denied to other races.
