Mailbag: Shattered Visage

Subject: I was wondering...

Have you ever read the book 'A Shattered Visage'? It has challenged atheism to the core such that many are flocking out left and right; namely many of my peers in public universities and top professors around the country. Those who have honestly researched whether the Bible is truly a reliable book and if its message is true.

Really? I wonder who? I asked "hiltop" to provide some names, but I never heard back.

I honestly doubt that Ravi Zacharias' book "A Shattered Visage" would have such a profound effect, considering how poor it is. This book contains numerous errors of fact, research, and logic. For example, Zacharias wastes a lot of ink trying to link atheism with Nietzsche (who's philosophy he totally misrepresents - so badly, in fact, that it would garner a failing grade for a first-year philosophy student), which is just silly. Much of his critiques appear to presume that atheists share a "worldview," which is even more silly. He actually spends very little time arguing for the error of atheism itself, devoting more of his book to tangential issues like evolution, which are irrelevant to accuracy or error of atheism.

I would not feel very comfortable having either a colleague or a teacher at a university who is easily swayed by Zacharias' "arguments."

I am not talking about the book of Mormon; that is fraudulent book.

I wonder what sort of standards "hiltop" uses for distinguishing "fraudulent" from "true" books. I have honestly researched the Bible, along with other holy books, during many years of studying religion at universities around the world. I have not found it to be any more or less "fraudulent" than the others - including the Book of Mormon. I rather doubt that hiltop has even read the Book of Mormon or other Mormon scriptures.

Another challenging to consider is "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" Vols. 1 & 2, and the book "More than a Carpenter". Every Atheist ought to read these books, because they were written by Atheists who tried to prove Christianity as being sourced from myth, legend, or lies. After their search and research they came to an interesting conclusion...

These books are even worse than Ravi Zacharias'. Josh McDowell's research is sloppy and never goes beyond superficialities. As a scholar and an academic, his books give him zero credibility. Unfortunately for the believers who rely upon him, his conclusions are not even slightly warranted by their arguments. Acceptance of his conclusions can only be based on refraining from a serious, critical, and informed evaluation of what he has written.
