Mailbag: Sad Excuse for Weak-Minded People
Dec 11th 2011, 08:00

From: "Bob"
Subject: What Is Atheism?

Atheism is a sad excuse for weak minded people who believe the only answer to religion is no religion they wont believe something until they see it, like most people, perhaps if they had religion they would see the differance in their lives. Though they are to **** stupid to realize that.

One could just as easily write that "theism is a sad excuse for weak minded people who believe that the only answer to life is God." I doubt, however, that either Bob or most theists would accept such description of their beliefs. So why toss out a similarly unsupported allegation about others? It's my experience that people who launch into such unprovoked, personal attacks are very rarely interested in anything that might resemble a substantive, civil, and adult conversation about the issues.

It should be noted here that Bob makes the common error of contrasting atheism with religion. Contrary to what many assume, atheism is not the absence of religion - it is the absence of theism. An atheist can be just as religious as any theist because some religions don't require a belief in any gods. Some theists can be just as anti-religious and just as critical of organized religions as any theist because having a belief in a god doesn't require that a person also have a religion, much less a traditional religion.

dont you think that one group of people who all believe that there is nothing to believe are a religion in themselves and therefore are contradicting everything they stand for just by being a group of people who believe the same and making it known to the world so any **** who can write a book and say we are a religion is obviously a very stupid person when it comes down to it, i could write a book on how stupid that person just is, and then people would start believing in a religion of stupidity and idioticy.

Atheists aren't people who "believe that there is nothing to believe" - that's just absurd. Atheists believe all sorts of things. The only thing that characterizes atheists is that they don't happen to believe in any gods - nothing more, nothing less. Atheists don't necessarily share any philosophy, they don't necessarily share any beliefs about the universe, and they don't necessarily share any ideas about religion.

And no, a group of atheists is no more a religion than atheism is a philosophy. Both religions and philosophies require a system of organized beliefs about the world; while atheists can certainly have religions and/or philosophies, the problem is there is no one single religion or philosophy which is shared by all atheists. There is no single religion or philosophy which a person can derive as a necessary consequence of atheism. Atheists don't all believe the same thing - whether the topic is religion, the universe, ethics, politics, or anything else.

well now then if i meet the creator of this site and figure out why the hell hes sending me **** newsletters in my email trying to convince me that atheism is a good thing im gonna find and kick the **** outta his stupid ****. Thank you for reading what i think about atheism and their whole STUPID ideals of regligion, FOR GOD SAKES WICCANS MAKE MORE SESNE. Thank you and God Bless

The only reason anyone receives a newsletter from this site is if they request it or if someone else requests it for them. I don't go around adding in random email address for the newsletter! And, if anyone wants to unsubscribe, there is a link to do just that at the bottom of every single newsletter. It's amazing how many people don't seem to notice that.

It's interesting, though, that Bob's reaction to a defense of atheism is not a counter-argument or a critique of anything I have written but, rather, is the urge to do violence and hurt someone else. I think that just goes to show how much intellectual quality and content Bob's position really has.
