It sounds like something from The Onion, but it could be real: an imam in Europe has reportedly declared that women shouldn't handle cucumbers, bananas, carrots, or zucchini. The reason is simple: to avoid developing "impure" thoughts due to the shape of these fruits and vegetables. Personally, I think that an imam like this is the one who has the problem with impure thoughts. He sees penises everywhere he looks. I wonder why?
It's no surprise that he hasn't been named, though.
The unnamed sheikh, who was featured in an article on el-Senousa news, was quoted saying that if women wish to eat these food items, a third party, preferably a male related to them such as their a father or husband, should cut the items into small pieces and serve.
He said that these fruits and vegetables "resemble the male penis" and hence could arouse women or "make them think of sex." Bikyamasr.com cannot independently verify the accuracy of the news item at time of writing.
The sheikh was asked how to "control" women when they are out shopping for groceries and if holding these items at the market would be bad for them. The cleric answered saying this matter is between them and God.
Answering another question about what to do if women in the family like these foods, the sheikh advised the interviewer to take the food and cut it for them in a hidden place so they cannot see it.

The story may or may not be real, there aren't enough details for anyone to verify. However, the attitudes behind the story are very real. These sorts of complaints and arguments say far more about the men who are making them than about the women who are being targeted. It's clearly the men who are obsessed with sex and sexual behavior. This imam, for example, seems to see penises everywhere he looks. Other men see nothing but temptation whenever they see women -- temptation which they then blame the women for.
This imam also seems to be a bit intimidated by penises, afraid of what will happen when women handle penis-shaped things. But he doesn't appear to have much of a problem with handling penis-shaped objects himself. In effect, he's trying to restrict the right to handle penises to men alone -- only men should have their hands on various penises.
Yes, this says a great deal about this imam and men like him.
