Axe Deodorant Ad Banned for Offending Christians Dec 1st 2011, 12:00 Usually faith-based censorship of the media seem to occur when Muslims express outrage, but Christians are just as capable of imposing their censorship on others. In South Africa, an advertisement for Axe Deodorant has been banned because a Christian -- a Christian, just one -- complained. It depicted angels descending from heaven and giving up their celestial status to pursue a man wearing the fragrance, and that apparently was too offensive. Named "Angels will Fall," it's hardly the most offensive thing in the media -- but some Christians lack the maturity or sense of humor required to allow it to exist. Well, one does at least. The male complainant told regulators he was angered by the suggestion that God's messengers could literally fall for a man on the basis of his shop-bought fragrance. The ASA [Advertising Standards Authority] banned the advert earlier this month after ruling it was likely others would also be offended. In its ruling, the authority said the depiction of angels losing their devout status was likely to upset Christians. The ruling, which was reported by South Africa's News24 website, stated: 'As such, the problem is not so much that angels are used in the commercial, but rather that the angels are seen to forfeit, or perhaps forego their heavenly status for mortal desires. 'This is something that would likely offend Christians in the same manner as it offended the complainant.' And that's... offensive? Really, there's absolutely no sense of humor or tolerance for others here. I'll bet this Christian's head would absolutely explode if they saw some of the alternative mythologies that have been created out of Christianity in some media, like for example the Preacher comics. Some people just need to be shut up in a hermetically sealed sphere so they can't be exposed to a single outside idea or thought.
