Definition:
Once a year, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates a feast day in order to honor and remember the "faith and steadfastness" of Jesus. This day is known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The heart was chosen as an object of devotion because of Jesus' love for humanity. A visual symbol representing this love is a heart surrounded by a crown of thorns and radiating light.

This devotion can be traced, in various forms, back through the Middle Ages amoung different mystics and ascetics. According to Catholic tradition, however, it's wider popularity can be traced more recently to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French Visitandine nun. She experienced a series of visions starting in 1673 which revealed to her the importance of devotion to the Sacred Heart and that she was to make this public.

Although the day moves around from year to year, it always occurs in June. A mass and office for a feast were originally suggested in the 17th century, but they first authorized in 1765 by Clement XIII. It was not until 1856 that it was added to the church calendar by Pius IX. Later, Leo XIII consecrated all of humanity to the Sacred Heart in 1899. Many churches and other religious organizations also include in their name the phrase "Sacred Heart" as a tribute to faith and steadfastness.

Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history.
